Frequently asked questions
Which audio formats can I import?
MP3, M4A, AAC, WAV, AIFF (including .aif and .aifc), CAF and FLAC. DRM-protected tracks, such as those downloaded from Apple Music, can’t be imported. If you pick a file in an unsupported format, RePitch tells you which files it left out.
How do I import my tracks?
Open the Library tab and tap “Import”, then choose files from the Files app. If a file is on iCloud Drive and hasn’t been downloaded to your phone yet, download it first and try again. Files are copied into the app’s private folder, so you can delete the originals without losing anything in RePitch.
What is the difference between the reference A and semitones or cents?
The reference A is the frequency your instrument is tuned to (for example 415 for Baroque, 440 or 442): RePitch detects each track’s A and brings it to yours, for all tracks at once. Semitones transpose everything by whole steps, for example to play lower. Cents are a fine correction, one hundredth of a semitone, added on top of the A.
Is the tuning saved per track?
Yes. By default every track follows the global tuning on the Tuning tab. If you open a track in the player and change semitones or cents, that track gets its own tuning, which you find again the next time you open it. “Back to the global tuning” makes the track follow the global one again.
How does RePitch detect a track’s A? What does “uncertain” mean?
After import the app analyses the track on your device, offline, and estimates its A. When the estimate is reliable you see “detected” and the value is applied. If you see “uncertain, not applied”, RePitch found a value but doesn’t trust it enough (it happens with very noisy or percussive recordings, or with few sustained notes), so it doesn’t use it. You can always tap the track’s A and choose the detected value or type your own.
How do I back up my settings and move to a new phone?
Settings are saved automatically on the device. For a safety copy go to About, then “Settings backup”, and choose “Export backup”: you can save the file to iCloud Drive or wherever you like. On the new phone use “Restore from backup”. The backup holds tunings, playlists and track titles, but not the audio: re-import your files and their settings come back by themselves.
Why does RePitch ask for microphone access?
Only for the tuner, which has to listen to the note you play. The microphone is on only while the tuner is open, and the sound is neither recorded nor stored. If you don’t grant access, everything else in the app works as usual.
Does RePitch work on iPad?
Yes, the app is built for iPhone and iPad, and on iPad it also works in landscape.
What about Android?
Coming soon. The Android version is in preparation: when it’s available you’ll see it announced on the home page of this site.
I found a problem or have a suggestion: how do I report it?
In the app open About and tap “Report a problem” or “Suggest an improvement”: a ready-made email opens, with the app and system version, which helps us understand what is going on. Or write straight to the address above, telling us what happened and what you expected.
